Tasks — turn notes into work

Any bullet can become a task. Tasks don't live in a separate app — they're bullets in your outline that happen to have a checkbox.

Turn a bullet into a task

Type /task then space, or use the bullet's ••• menu → Convert to task.

A checkbox appears. The bullet now has status, due date, priority, and scheduled date fields.

Cmd+Enter on a task toggles it done.

Status

Six states: Open, In Progress, Hold, Blocked, Done, Archived.

Click the checkbox or use the bullet menu to change status.

Done tasks stay in place in the outline — they're not removed. The Tasks view filters them out by default.

Due dates and scheduled dates

Set via the bullet menu or task panel.

Both show as chips next to the bullet.

Priority

Low, Medium, High, Urgent. Optional.

The Tasks view

In the sidebar: Tasks. A dashboard of every task in your vault, grouped by where it belongs right now.

Sections: Overdue, Today, In Progress, Open, Scheduled, Blocked, Hold, Done.

Click any task to jump to its place in the outline (its "origin"). Tasks aren't decontextualized — they're always a bullet somewhere.

Recurring tasks

When a recurring task is marked done, a fresh copy reappears on the next occurrence — same content, fresh status. Set the recurrence in the task's menu.

Why this shape

Most task tools force you to copy a thought twice — once into your notes, once into a separate todo. Thoute keeps the task where the thought lives, so the context comes with it.
